About Revv
Engineers who scan, not just scanner operators

The business
From race-truck design to precision scanning
Revv Engineering is a design and 3D scanning company in Reno, Nevada. It began as a freelance mechanical design business and grew to add 3D scanning, 3D printing and manufacturing consulting, from one-off custom creations to production parts.
Scanning came naturally out of the design work. Designing a chassis, suspension or bumper around real geometry beats working from a tape measure, so we started capturing that geometry ourselves. Today we scan everything from small brackets to complete vehicles, jet engines and aircraft cockpits, and we still design the parts that mount to them.
That design background is the difference. We know which features matter, how a fabricator will use the data, and what a clean STEP file needs to look like when it lands in your CAD system.
The founder
Joshua Frey
Owner & Mechanical Designer
Josh Frey is a mechanical designer and the owner of Revv Engineering. Born and raised in Reno, he earned his bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering at the University of Nevada, Reno.
Before starting Revv in November 2023, Josh designed trophy trucks and other high-performance off-road vehicles. That work taught him how much a project depends on accurate geometry: a chassis, suspension or bumper is only as good as the measurements it was designed around.
Today he scans and designs for race teams, aviation shops, fabricators and manufacturers. He still has the same passion for off-road race cars he started with, and he brings that same attention to a jet engine as to a trophy truck.
“You don’t buy a drill to have a drill. You buy it because you need a hole. Tell me what you’re trying to build, and I’ll make sure the scan gets you there.”

How we work
What you can expect
Design first
We started as a mechanical design company. We scan knowing exactly what an engineer needs from the data, because we design from it ourselves.
Honest numbers
Instant estimates, clear deliverables and a firm quote before work starts. If a mesh is all you need, we will tell you.
Your data stays yours
We are happy to work under your NDA, and we do not share your parts, photos or scan data without permission.
Equipment & software
Portable, precise and ready to travel
- Handheld blue-laser and structured white-light 3D scanners
- Accuracy up to 0.03 mm (0.0012 in)
- Positioning targets and sublimating scanning spray for difficult surfaces
- SolidWorks for reverse engineering and design
- Mesh deliverables in STL, OBJ and PLY; CAD in STEP, Parasolid (X_T) and IGES
- Everything packs into cases for on-site work anywhere in the US
