FAQ

3D scanning questions, answered

Can’t find your answer? Ask us directly.

How accurate is your 3D scanning?

Our handheld blue-laser and structured-light scanners capture detail with accuracy up to 0.03 mm (0.0012 in). On large objects like a full vehicle, overall accuracy depends on size and setup, so we use positioning targets to hold it across the whole object and talk through the tolerance your project needs before we start.

How much does 3D scanning cost?

Price depends on size, shape complexity, surface finish, the deliverable you need and where we scan. Our instant estimate tool gives you a budget range in about two minutes, and we confirm a firm price after reviewing your part.

What can you scan?

Anything from a shift knob to a full vehicle. We have scanned trucks inside and out, tube chassis, a jet engine, an aircraft cockpit, a bus undercarriage and a large metal sculpture.

What files do I get?

Scan data comes as an STL mesh (OBJ or PLY on request). If you need CAD, we model in SolidWorks and deliver STEP, Parasolid (X_T) or IGES files you can machine, laser-cut or edit.

Do you travel for on-site scanning?

Yes. We are based in Reno, Nevada and bring portable scanners to shops, hangars, race teams and factories across Northern Nevada, Northern California and anywhere else in the US.

How long does a scan take?

Scanning takes about half an hour for a small, simple part, an hour or two for something like a steering rack or helmet, and 8–12 hours for a complete vehicle inside and out. Processing and CAD time depend on the deliverable. For drop-offs in Reno, same-day scanning can often be arranged.

Can I ship my part to you?

Yes. Pack it well, include your contact details and a note on any critical features, and ship it to us. We scan it and ship it back when scanning is done. Our scan prep checklist covers packing tips.

Do you sign NDAs?

Yes, we are happy to work under your NDA. We do not share your parts, photos or scan data without your permission.

Will the scanning spray or targets damage my part?

No. Positioning targets are small stickers that peel off cleanly. Shiny, black or clear surfaces get a thin sublimating spray that evaporates on its own within hours and leaves no residue.

Can you design parts from the scan too?

Yes. Revv Engineering started as a mechanical design company. We design bumpers, mounts, suspension and full tube chassis around scanned geometry, not just the scan itself.
